Joe's Bakery · Birmingham metro

Wedding cakes in Birmingham, AL

Baked in our Alabaster kitchen, delivered across the metro, and assembled on site — tiered cakes travel in pieces and get built at the venue, which is the only way they arrive straight.

And because we're a restaurant before we're a bakery, the cake and the reception dinner can come from the same kitchen on the same contract.

One kitchen, one timeline

A reception normally involves three vendors who have never worked together: the caterer, the baker, and the bar. Cake cut is the moment that shows — the kitchen is clearing dinner while a separate baker's delivery window has already closed and nobody is sure who moves the table.

We do all three. That means the cake arrives with the food, the same lead knows both timelines, and the person you call at 6:40pm when the ceremony runs long is the person who can actually change something.

Finishes

What actually changes the price

Not the flavor. Tiers, finish, and how many hours the design takes by hand.

Buttercream

The Southern default for a reason — it tastes like cake rather than like a covering, and it photographs soft. Best value per tier.

Fondant & sugar work

For clean architectural edges and sculpted flowers. More hours by hand, which is what moves the price, not the ingredient.

Naked & semi-naked

Exposed layers with minimal finish. Suits mills, wineries, and barn venues; less forgiving in August heat, so we plan the delivery window around it.

Groom's cakes & dessert tables

Second cakes, cannoli stations, and dessert spreads when one tiered cake isn't the whole plan.

FAQ

Wedding cake questions

  • How much does a wedding cake cost in Birmingham?

Cost moves on three things: the number of tiers, the finish (buttercream is the most affordable; fondant and hand-sculpted sugar flowers sit at the top), and how much of the design is built by hand rather than piped. We quote each cake instead of publishing a price list. Send your date, guest count, and a couple of inspiration photos and we'll come back with an exact number.

  • Do you deliver wedding cakes to Birmingham venues?

Yes. We deliver and set up across the Birmingham metro and Shelby County from our Alabaster bakery — tiered cakes are assembled on site, not carried in finished. Delivery is quoted with the cake.

  • Can I get the cake and the catering from the same place?

That's the point of doing both. Cake and wedding catering can sit on one contract, which means one delivery window, one timeline, and one person to call when the ceremony runs long — rather than a baker and a caterer who have never spoken.

  • How far ahead should I book a wedding cake?

Two to three months ahead for a Saturday in spring or fall. We take shorter runways when the calendar allows — call (205) 663-4111 and ask rather than assuming the date is gone.

  • Can we taste the cake before we book?

Yes. We're a working restaurant, so you can eat our food and our bakery's dessert in the dining room in Alabaster before you commit to anything. Cake tastings for booked wedding dates are arranged with your consultation.

  • Do you do groom's cakes and dessert tables?

Yes — groom's cakes, dessert tables, cannoli stations, and cupcake alternatives. If you want dessert to be more than one cake, say so in the inquiry and we'll price the spread.
